Pdf Summary
This case report discusses the potential negative health impacts of e-cigarette use, particularly the possibility of serious pulmonary reactions mimicking metastatic cancer. The report focuses on a 45-year-old woman who had switched from smoking traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes. She presented with symptoms such as abdominal pain and fever. Initial medical imaging suggested the presence of widespread cancer metastases due to numerous nodules in the lungs and liver lesions. However, extensive evaluations, including biopsies and various medical tests, ruled out malignancy.

A lung biopsy later showed a foreign body reaction with multinucleated giant cells, possibly due to glycerin-based oils, commonly found in e-cigarette vapor. Remarkably, after the patient stopped using e-cigarettes, the lung nodules completely regressed without further treatment.

This case highlights the potential for e-cigarettes to cause inflammatory reactions in the lungs, leading to the development of nodules that can imitate metastatic cancer. It emphasizes the lack of substantial long-term safety data concerning e-cigarette use and points out that such adverse effects could lead to unnecessary invasive medical procedures and significant patient distress.

The report calls attention to the urgent need for further research into the safety and long-term health effects of e-cigarettes, noting that similar inflammatory lung conditions like eosinophilic pneumonitis and lipoid pneumonia have been associated with vaping. Despite some studies suggesting that e-cigarettes might aid smoking cessation, there are still considerable concerns about their safety, consistent with warnings from the FDA and other health experts about the potential presence of carcinogens and toxic chemicals in vaping liquids.
